Greta Gerwig Revealed What Would Have to Happen to Decide to Make Barbie 2

The Barbie movie is still in fashion. Released in 2023, the film directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie , was the highest grossing film in theaters that year, and the awards and nominations it received are countless. And although it does not seem to be a solid contender for the next Oscars, it is undeniable that this film will be one of the great stars of the night. For this reason, the question of whether or not there could be a second part is something that greatly intrigues fans. And in the framework of a talk, Gerwig confessed what would have to happen to launch a sequel.

On Wednesday afternoon, Greta Gerwig was honored as one of the Women of the Year, within the framework of an event held in Los Angeles. During that talk, the director spoke about what Barbie meant to her career, and in this regard she expressed: “My horizon was to ask myself what it was that I loved with the most commitment, what it was that mattered most to me, that is, to ask myself what it was. the story beneath the story. And regarding Barbie , the underlying plot was that I loved that doll. I remember going to the toy store, looking at the Barbies and loving her hairstyle. I loved everything that had to do with them, but my mom wasn’t very excited about it. “Then I discovered that that was the story, that that was the plot of my entire generation, and I’m always trying to find those hooks.”

And later, the director responded to the question about whether or not she would make a sequel, and at that moment revealed: “If I find that hook again, then we’ll be fine. But if I don’t find that hook, then there will be no movie.” And although that phrase may be somewhat ambiguous, Gerwig later specified: “That film was something I made with a lot of love. And I very much love that world that we built and all those who acted in that film. So the idea of working with that group again is something very exciting.”

This statement, fortunately for fans of the film, contradicts something the director said in July of last year. In that instance, Gerwig buried the chances of a sequel when she exclaimed: “I feel like this at the end of every movie, like I never had another idea and everything I ever wanted to do, I did. “I wouldn’t want to crush anyone else’s dream, but for me, right now, I’m totally at zero.”

Last January 23the nominees were metto the Oscar awards, and although there were names and titles that – as expected – appeared, there were some absences that caught attention.Margot Robbie , protagonist of Barbie, was left out of the Best Actress category, while Greta Gerwing was not included in the Director shortlist for the same film.

Behind thecommotion that was generated on social networks, since several fans of the film repudiated the absence of women in the aforementioned categories, and after her own colleagues expressed their disagreement with the Academy’s decision, Margot Robbie broke the silence and made clear her position on regard.

“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as director, because what she did is something unique in her career, something unique in her life, what she achieved, it really is,” said Margot Robbie, according to what she gatheredthe Deadline site .“But, it has been an incredible year for all the films,” he remarked to avoid getting into controversy.

“We set out to do something that would change the culture, affect the culture, just make some kind of impact. And it already has, and in some cases much more than we ever dreamed. And that is truly the greatest reward that could come from all of this,” said the Wolf of Wall Street actress.

Finally, he referred to the impact that the film had on the public and the phenomenon that occurred around it. “I’ve never been a part of anything like this. Not that way. I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie has had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.”
