The highly anticipated Harry Potter series that HBO is developing for its platform promises to revive the magic of the saga with a fresh and detailed perspective. Bonnie Wright , known for her iconic role as Ginny Weasley in the original films, has shared her hopes for how the series could surpass the film adaptations. In a recent interview during the Back to Hogwarts event in New York, Wright revealed her expectations for the new series and how she believes it can offer a more complete experience for fans.
The Harry Potter series, better than the movies?
Wright, who played Ginny from childhood to adolescence across all eight films, said one of the most exciting aspects of the series is its potential to more deeply explore character relationships and nuances that weren’t fully developed in the films.
In particular, Wright expressed her desire for the series to delve deeper into the evolution of the relationship between Ginny and Harry Potter, an aspect she sees as crucial. “There are nuanced moments where they start to fall in love. I think more about that arc where her character becomes this true loyal companion to Harry and how she really understands and knows his story,” Wright said (via Variety ). “If only we could have had five-hour movies. There are so many characters that have moments that I love from the books — Neville and Luna — so as a fan of the books, I hope we get to see more of that.”

The long-awaited Harry Potter series on HBO
The series, which is set to premiere in 2026, will adapt each of JK Rowling ‘s seven books in one season, offering a unique opportunity to explore the rich Harry Potter universe in greater detail. Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, known for their work on ‘Succession’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, are reportedly directing and producing, promising a faithful and enriched adaptation of the books.
Wright also acknowledged the challenge facing new actors taking on the roles of Harry, Ron, Hermione and other iconic characters. Despite the pressure, he encouraged the young performers to bring their own interpretations, without feeling constrained by previous versions. “I think it’s really important for them to be in their world and their interpretation of it. And I think it’s really important, from an actor’s perspective and a director’s perspective, to really make it their own.”
While Bonnie Wright won’t be appearing in the series or in a cameo role, she is preparing to return to the world of Harry Potter in a different way. She will be serving as a judge on the Food Network’s themed baking competition show Wizards of Baking alongside twins James and Oliver Phelps. Wright expressed excitement about the opportunity to relive memories from the original sets and experience the creativity of the new show in an unexpected context.
