Chris Hemsworth continues to dominate the global box office with his latest animated film, Transformers One (89%) . Though the film has performed modestly, grossing just over $70 million in its first 10 days globally, it continues to propel the actor toward an impressive financial milestone: $14 billion in global career grosses.
With his portrayal of the voice of Optimus Prime in ‘Transformers One,’ Hemsworth adds another iconic character to his extensive career, moving ever closer to that monumental mark at the global box office.
How much money has Chris Hemsworth made at the box office this year?
2024 has been a particularly fruitful year for Chris Hemsworth. While ‘Transformers One’ has not been an immediate success compared to other films in the genre, his participation has contributed significantly to the actor’s total earnings, which already exceeds $13.96 billion.
According to ‘Collider’, with ‘Transformers One’ still in theaters, Hemsworth is just $40 million away from reaching the impressive figure of $14 billion at the global box office.
Much of Hemsworth’s box office success this year can also be attributed to his involvement in other major productions. Notable among them is his role in Deadpool & Wolverine (79%) , a film that has generated over $1.3 billion at the global box office and has been a key driver in cementing Hemsworth as one of the highest-grossing actors of the past decade. This combination of films has kept Hemsworth at the top, solidifying his place among Hollywood’s most successful stars.
Chris Hemsworth vs. Marvel movies: Here’s how the ‘battle’ of the actor vs. the MCU goes
According to ‘Collider’, despite Chris Hemsworth’s successes outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), much of his impressive box office earnings come from his role as Thor. Five of his films have surpassed the $1 billion mark, all from the MCU. Among them, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ stand out, having together grossed more than $4.7 billion, which represents a significant portion of their global box office.
However, none of Thor’s solo films, such as Thor: Ragnarok or Thor: Love and Thunder, have ever reached $1 billion. Despite this, these films still out-gross any of Hemsworth’s other projects outside of the MCU, such as Snow White and the Huntsman, which grossed $400 million.
With Transformers One, Hemsworth has shown that he remains a force at the box office outside of the MCU, though much of his success is tied to Marvel. While Hemsworth is closing in on $14 billion at the global box office, other MCU actors, such as Robert Downey Jr. ($16 billion) and Scarlett Johansson ($15 billion), continue to outpace his financial numbers.
What did critics say about ‘Transformers One’?
‘Transformers One’ has received positive reviews, with praise for its vibrant animation, careful world-building and respect for the classic ‘Transformers’ mythology. Critics have highlighted its exciting storyline, strong voice acting and focus on characters, cementing it as a strong revival for the franchise.
Although it is primarily aimed at a young audience, the film has managed to capture the attention of people of all ages, positioning itself as a promising start for future installments.
Swara Salih from But Why Tho?
Transformers One breathes new life into the Transformers franchise in the most superb way, while keeping it rooted in the canon so beloved by fans around the world. With a superb story, excellent performances, extraordinary and enthralling animation, thrilling action, and a fast-paced story that takes you on a thrilling ride, this film has plenty to enjoy for both new and old fans. Head to the theater as soon as possible to see this exemplary work of animation.
Brian Orndorf of Blu-Ray.com
There may not be any surprises in the film, but Transformers One is aimed at an under-12 audience and comes to them with pronounced conflicts and friendships, treating the central crisis of brotherhood and survival as seriously as this type of film allows. Cooley caters to younger viewers but doesn’t dumb down the film, making sure that all ages have something to enjoy, and the stage is certainly set for a more traditional battle between good and evil if Transformers Two does come to fruition.
Jeffrey Harris of 411 Mania
Director Josh Cooley delivers an immersive and vibrant take on Cybertron, respecting classic story elements while forging a fresh take on the Transformers mythology that starts from square one. The lack of pesky human characters and down-to-earth storytelling allows for a greater focus on the Transformers as characters. Transformers hasn’t looked this good on the big screen since 1986.
Cain Noble-Davies of FilmInk
Transformers One offers a new era for the franchise, and an extremely intriguing one at that. While Rise of the Beasts worked well as an aesthetic plaster between two eras of live-action movies, this one succeeds by being pure, full-on Transformers. It takes a little time to really get going, but between the action scenes and the intent, this is one modded car with serious power under the hood.
Matt Fernandez from Geeks of Color
While most of the films to date (save for the original and the Bumblebee reboot) felt like over-the-top excuses to sell toys, this new film takes its world-building and characters seriously, telling a story that rewards audiences for getting emotionally invested in the characters. Combined with gorgeously nostalgic designs and fun action sequences, Transformers One serves as an encouraging jumping-off point for a potential trilogy or even larger series. It feels good to be a Transformers fan again.
