Andrew Garfield: Why Putting On The Spider-man Suit Again Was “a Healing Experience” And His Fond Memory With Tobey Maguire

You could say that Andrew Garfield is the “middle” Spider-Man. In 2012 and 2014, the actor starred in the Amazing Spider-Man installments; however, the second film, The Menace of Electro, was not well received by critics and audiences, and the third was directly cancelled. Garfield began to say goodbye to that iconic character that gave him international popularity with a bittersweet taste. However, in 2021 the actor had redemption with a surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside the “original Spider-Man” Tobey Maguire and the “current Spider-Man” Tom Holland. In the last few hours, the actor spoke of his desire to put on the spider suit again, although he clarified what his requirements would be to do so.

It was a really healing experience,” Garfield confessed in an interview with Esquire magazine about that installment where his character and Tobey Maguire’s became mentors to Tom Holland’s character. The film was the highest-grossing of 2021, grossing almost $2 billion. Since then, both the public and its actors hope for a fourth installment. And while there have already been some meetings to talk about it, the three protagonists agree that a good reason must be found to return to the screen. “Without a doubt, I would go back 100 percent if it was the right thing to do, if it adds to the culture, if there is a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that is unique and strange and exciting,” Garfield said while confessing what this web-swinging superhero means to him: “I love that character and it brings me joy,” he revealed.

At the time of the film’s release, Garfield and Maguire sneaked into several movie theaters to see the audience’s reaction live; something that became a trending topic on social media and that caused many to hope to meet the actors at some screening. “I sneaked into a theater on opening night and only saw it with my baseball cap and my mask [the film was released during the pandemic]. I was also with Tobey, we sneaked into a theater together and nobody knew we were there. It was really nice to share that together,” recalled who claims to have forged a nice brotherhood with the original Spider-Man. “Also with Tom, we shared a unique experience,” he added.

For the moment, the actor is focused on We Live in Time , a film he stars in with Florence Pugh. “I think I’m excited to get back to work in a different way. I feel freer, less precious. I feel happier. I feel more aware. I feel established enough as a person in the world, as an actor within myself and within the world,” he expressed in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, who is returning to the big screen with a leading role after two years.

I know myself well enough now to feel more enjoyment… I’m still a madman: when I’m on a set, I’m like a dog with a bone and I’m overcome with a strange spirit that is never satisfied, but that will never change and I don’t want it to, but within that, I can feel much more pleasure and much more enjoyment and play and freedom,” he concluded.
