American actor and country music star Kris Kristofferson has died at the age of 88, his family announced on Sunday.
Considered a country legend, Kristofferson gained further fame after starring alongside Barbra Streisand in the 1976 film “A Star is Born,” for which he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our husband/father/grandfather Kris Kristofferson passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 28th” in Hawaii, his family said in a brief note on their official Facebook page, which did not specify the cause of death.
Kristofferson, in addition to being recognized by the Country Music Hall of Fame in the United States and winning a Grammy Award, wrote hits such as “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
Although he was best known for performing solo for decades, he also formed the renowned band The Highwaymen in the mid-1980s alongside other legends such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.
“We were all blessed by our time with him, thank you for loving him all these years,” his family added in the statement.
Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. He is survived by his third wife, Lisa, and their eight children.
